Are dark and moody kitchens on the rise? According to NKBA's recently released 2023 Design Trends report, they may be gaining traction.

Focusing on new and upcoming trends while noting trends that are gaining traction, "'moody' is expected to be one of the top three most-popular tones for kitchen design in the immediate future." While white and off-white neutral tones remain the most popular at the moment, bolder colors are gradually gaining traction. The top two? Green, with a 45% rise and blue at 37%.

Blues and greens are also making their way into bathrooms, contributing towards a relaxing spa-like experience. In the bathroom, the use of blues has risen 42%, while greens have risen 37%.

The NKBA looked into remodeling trends, with kitchens and bathrooms notably being the areas chosen most for remodel. Removing walls to create and utilize space has been popular. In the kitchen the space is being utilized to create walk-in pantries or to add larger islands. Technology features being considered or added include ovens with air fryers or steam cookers integrated touchless faucets, and voice controlled lighting.

Bathroom remodeling, however, is more focused around creating more features that are aging-friendly. For example, in addition to over-sized showers in lieu of a tub, there has been a 79% rise in shower benches, a 66% rise in zero clearance or walk-in showers, and a 35% increase in grab bars.
